Food scrap pick-up service (FREE for residents of Kent & Ottawa Counties)
Want to keep your food scraps out of the landfill? Don't really have the capacity to compost yourself? Our composting worms would love to take your scraps off your hands!
When you sign up for our food scrap pick-up service, we'll give you a 3.5-gallon bucket to throw your food scraps in to. Once it's full, you contact us and leave your bucket on your porch. We'll pick up your full bucket, and leave you an empty one.
Your food scraps will then be fed to our composting worms, who will turn it into a nutrient-rich soil amendment: our Living Worm Compost.
Our service, which runs May through October, is free to anyone living in Kent or Ottawa County, Michigan! We only ask that you pay a $10 refundable deposit for the buckets. At the end of the season, as long as we are able to collect your bucket from you, and all of your buckets throughout the season return to us in good condition, you'll get your $10 back.
Here's the best part: For every full bucket of food scraps we pick up, we'll give you a credit for Good Sweet Earth products and services. How much of a credit you receive is determined by which plan you choose.
Plan 1: Picky eaters. For this plan, we ask that there not be any tomatoes, berries, cucumbers, peppers, citrus or onions in the bucket. This plan also means no egg shells. Any other raw fruits, veggies or coffee grounds are good to go! So what's good: Root and leaf veggies, celery, apples, avocado skins, fruits with pits, banana peels, potato skins, etc. Nothing with small seeds, nothing acidic, nothing spicy. With this plan, you'll earn a $4 credit each time we pick up a full bucket. BONUS: Sign up with this plan before the end of August 2020, and we'll give you a $75 credit toward organic lawn care!
Plan 2: (Almost) Anything goes. With this plan, feel free to put those tomatoes, berries, cucumbers, citrus, onions and egg shells in with the other stuff. With this plan, you'll earn a $1 credit each time we pick up a full bucket.
When you sign up, you'll receive: A 3.5 gallon bucket, a tight-fitting lid, a list of things you can and can't put into the bucket, plus a regular update on how much you've earned.
The credits you earn carry over from season to season, and can be used on any of our products or services (including organic lawn service).
Be a part of healing soil in lawns, gardens and small farms all across West Michigan by vermicomposting your food scraps with Good Sweet Earth!
(We incorporate our food scrap pick-ups into our lawn fertilization route. Once you let us know you're ready for a pick-up, we'll let you know the next time we'll be in your neighborhood, and it'll typically be within a week. This allows us to offer this service for free, while also limiting our gas consumption. This is also why we only offer this service from May through October.)
