Food scrap pick-up service

Free food scrap pick-up service for Kent & Ottawa County residents, May-October

Picture
Turn your kitchen scraps into super soil!

Don't throw those carrot tops, avocado peels, rotten bananas, apple cores, slimy uneaten bags of spinach, and corn husks in the garbage! Not only will they sit in a landfill and wreak havoc on our planet, but you're missing out on the opportunity to turn those scraps into a nutrient-rich soil amendment: Vermicompost!

If you live in Kent or Ottawa County, Michigan, we will be happy to take those scraps off your hands, from May through October, at no cost to you, and offer you credits to purchase Good Sweet Earth products and services as a hearty thank you. You can even use the credits you earn toward our organic lawn service.

Our worms are hungry. We've got hundreds of thousands of them, and they eat half of their body weight in food every day. That means 10,000 worms can eat a 150 pounds of rotten produce a month. For the past ten years, we've been working with local farms and markets to take unsold produce off their hands to feed to our worms. We still do this. But as our lawn fertilization and garden consultation business has grown, we're travelling all over West Michigan on a weekly basis. There's a real good chance we're in your neighborhood multiple times over the course of a month (that is, if you live in the Grand Rapids/Lakeshore area). That means if you've got some fruit and veggie scraps, we'd love to swing by when we're in your area, and pick it up.

When you sign up for our Food Scrap Pick-up Service, aside from the $10 you'll pay as a bucket deposit (refundable at the end of the year), you pay nothing to have us pick up your kitchen scraps right from your porch!

How it works: First, sign up here. Then we'll drop off a 3.5 gallon bucket and some info on the program (do's and don't's for food collection). You'll then toss your fruit and veggie scraps into the bucket. Once it's full, you shoot us a text. We'll look at our lawn fertilization schedule, and text you back to let you know the next day we'll be in your area (typically within a week). For each full bucket we pick up, we'll give you a $4 credit to purchase Good Sweet Earth products and/or services.

We are a bit picky about what we feed our worms, which means we don't want certain things put in the buckets:
  • nothing with small seeds (tomatoes, berries, cucumbers),
  • no citrus (too acidic for our worms),
  • no peppers (small seeds AND the capsaicin in the spicy ones can be rough on the worms' delicate skin),
  • no egg shells,
  • no meat, dairy or oils (neither animal- nor plant-based oils),
  • no cooked, sauced, seasoned or processed foods (baked goods, canned goods, etc)
  • no landscape scraps or trimmings (a minimal amount of cut flowers are ok).
What our worms do love:
  • leafy greens,
  • root veggies,
  • fruits (peaches, cherries, apples, bananas & peels, grapes, etc)
  • avocados and their skins,
  • celery,
  • onion skins & garlic skins,
  • coffee grounds & tea leaves,
  • herbs & flowers.
And the moldier the better!
